From the diverse natural behaviour of rabbits and their biological characteristics arise the following requirements for species-appropriate husbandry:
- Sufficient space allowance
- Structuring into functional areas
- Resting and retreat areas
- Enrichment
- Contact to conspecifics
- Permanent access to roughage
- Ad libitum drinking water of good quality
- Daylight
- Adequate barn climate
- Outdoor access
- Animal-friendly, calm handling
