Problems concerning management, feeding
Offered feed is unsuitable for ruminants
- A roughage-to-concentrate ratio of less than 50:50 reduces the activity in the rumen and thus the rumination time; the rumen acidifies; the result is ruminal acidosis, a serious health problem.
- A twisted (displaced) abomasum often results from the goat ingesting too much concentrate and leads to death if noticed too late.
- In organic farming, the daily feed ration for ruminants must include 60% roughage.
