Horned goats/dehorning

The horn buds of goats are part of the skull and in close proximity to the brain – utmost caution required during dehorning!

According to the German ‘Animal Welfare Act’ (Art. 6D), the dehorning of goats is prohibited (only dehorning of cattle is permitted and regulated though Exemption Art. 5).

Legislation D and A: Legal exemption must be approved, execution only through veterinarian, anaesthesia mandatory.
In Austria permitted until 31 Dec 2015 for kids in dairy operations, through veterinarian and with anaesthesia.

In Switzerland permitted, only local anaesthesia required; through trained personnel or veterinarian.
