Milking year round
As goats breed seasonally, the winter normally represents a lactation-free period. To meet consumer demand for fresh goat cheese, farmers may keep part of their herd unmated and continue milking. This ongoing milking usually lasts for 2 to 2.5 years, occasionally up to 4 years.
Advantages:
- milk year round
- fewer kids (little profit, not marketable)
- doe not burdened with pregnancy and birth
Disadvantage:
- against biological rhythm
